Checksum |
Encapsulation |
Checksum is an error-detection scheme used to count the amount of bits in a data message. Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is a code which is added to data to identify any errors whilst data is in transmission, storage or retrieval. This is important because it checks the accuracy of the data, making sure errors are kept to a minimum which will help the validity of the data.
Addresses“A label, as an integer, symbol, or other set of characters, designating a location, register, etc., where information is stored in computer memory.” An IP address is an example of a data element address. IP stands for Internet Protocol. IP addresses are used to recognise a specific device which uses TCP/IP. An IP address identifies devices that are communicating using the internet protocol.

Encapsulation is the process of ‘packing’ data into one message. “The message in the packet is encapsulated with some information such as the address of next node, protocol information, the type of data and the source and destination addresses.” Encapsulation is basically combining similar data together to form one large bit of data. Encapsulation can also be condensing data to hide information.
Datagrams"A datagram is a unit of transfer associated with networking. A datagram has the following characteristics:
